Description
As the Design Manager at Melton Design Build, you will play a critical role in overseeing the design phase of our projects. You will be responsible for managing a team of interior designers, architects, and other design professionals while collaborating closely with the construction team to ensure successful project execution. Your expertise in design, project management, leadership, and communication will be instrumental in delivering high-quality results and maintaining client satisfaction.
Essential Functions
- Supervise and manage Design staff including architects, architectural designers, interior designers, and drafters. This may include re-prioritizing the projects in Design to respond to client changes, production requests, estimating needs, or requests from Project Development (sales).
- Work collaboratively with other departments to define and refine our processes so we deliver quality designs, on time and on budget with happy internal and external customers.
- Hold Design Team members accountable to our established processes and standards.
- Manage the department’s workload in Smartsheet, assign appropriate teams after new Conceptual Design Agreements (contracts) are signed, and manage the team to meet deadlines.
- Participate in sales and design presentations and support the sales process as requested.
- Onboard new Design Department employees depending on roles. Some new hires will be trained by other design department managers-i.e., interior designers, and drafters.
- Recruit, interview, hire, and train new staff. Develop, train, and mentor the existing staff.
- Provide constructive and timely feedback and performance evaluations.
- Hold weekly meetings with direct reports and create a cadence of accountability.
- Participate in weekly sales & design meetings, and review all projects currently in design & production.
- Accountable for the performance of the Design Department, including schedules and design budgets.
- Manage the Design Department so that it is client-centric: clients are ecstatic with their experience and 85% or more of our design clients hire us to build their projects.
- Continually improve department workflow, processes, and systems. This includes establishing and enforcing drawing set standards, Revit standards, rendering standards, design process checklists, permitting requirements, product standards, etc.
- Develop a process to ensure the quality of designs (architectural plans, cabinet layouts, renderings, product selection sheets, etc.) before they go out to clients or other Melton employees. Act as Quality Control for Design.
- Periodic on-site observation of construction.
- Promote Melton’s core values and purpose.

Skills & Knowledge
- Capacity to lead, manage, and develop a team.
- Ability to set goals and give clear direction to the team.
- Ability to develop schedules, manage a team’s workload, and meet design deadlines.
- Strong computer skills, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and design programs.
- Fully understands residential and commercial design and construction processes.
- Knowledge of building codes in different municipalities.
- Proficiency with Revit, Adobe Suite, and rendering software is a must.
Education & Experience
- Experience managing a team of people.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and teamwork skills.
- 8 to 10 years of related experience, preferably in a production (higher volume) environment.
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a design-related field.
- Sales and design presentation experience.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Experience working within a design/build framework is a plus.
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods of standing and sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
- Must be able to travel and navigate to client sites.
- Must be able to work safely at client sites in a variety of weather conditions and terrains.

Position Pay Information:
Full Time (40 hours)
Salary: $85,000-$135,000 Annually
