What Our Recertification Means

There is a fair question behind any B Corp announcement: what does the score actually tell you?

Not just what B Corp Certification is, but what it means when a score goes up, what it takes to improve it, and why that number can carry different weight depending on the kind of business being measured.

In March 2026, we recertified as a Certified B Corporation. Our B Impact Score is now 94.6, up 6 points from the 88.6 we earned at our initial certification in 2023. We think that number says something real about how we operate.

The Numbers in Context

B Corp Certification requires a score of 80 or above on the B Impact Assessment, which is administered by B Lab. The median score for businesses completing the assessment is 50.9. We scored 94.6.

That context matters. A score above 80 means a business met the certification threshold. A score of 94.6 reflects a deeper level of accountability across the way a company operates.

Impact Area Scores

Community: 32.3

Community evaluates a company’s engagement with and impact on the communities in which it operates, hires from, and sources from.

Workers: 21.8

Workers evaluates a company’s contributions to its employees’ financial security, health & safety, wellness, career development, and engagement & satisfaction.

Environment: 20.9

Environment evaluates a company’s overall environmental management practices as well as its impact on the air, climate, water, land, and biodiversity.

Governance: 15.2

Governance evaluates a company’s overall mission, engagement around its social/environmental impact, ethics, and transparency.

Customers: 3.9

Customers evaluates a company’s stewardship of its customers through the quality of its products and services, ethical marketing, data privacy and security, and feedback channels.

Community is our strongest area, and that is not accidental. It reflects extensive local economic development work, longstanding community partnerships, and our deep roots in Boulder and the surrounding communities.

Why This Matters for a Design-Build Firm

B Lab classifies Melton under the sector “Service with Significant Environmental Footprint.” That classification matters because the assessment for a firm like ours covers more than office operations.

It includes where materials are sourced, the practices of trade partners who work on our jobsites, jobsite waste management and diversion, and the broader impact we have as an employer, neighbor, and local business.

That is part of what makes this score meaningful to us. It reflects effort across a team, a process, and a supply chain.

What the Work Looks Like in Practice

Some parts of this story are easier to measure than others, but the most meaningful examples usually span more than one category.

One example is Melton Cares, our charitable initiative officially launched in 2024 to improve accessibility, safety, comfort, and community enjoyment across homes and community spaces. The program reflects a people-first approach to the built environment and extends our work beyond client projects into broader community impact.

Our 2025 Melton Cares work included an extensive remodel in Longmont which created a more accessible main-level living environment for a household with a family member who uses mobility equipment, all completed at no cost to the homeowners. Our work also extended into the public realm at Bill Bower Park in South Boulder, where updates to paths, seating, and access points were designed to create a more welcoming and accessible experience for visitors of all abilities.

That same year, our team also recycled, diverted, or donated more than 16 tons of materials. These are different kinds of impact, but they are connected. Both reflect a commitment to doing thoughtful work that improves how people experience the spaces around them.

These outcomes do not happen automatically. They require planning, coordination, follow-through, and people who are willing to go the extra mile.

These are just a few examples of what a score of 94.6 reflects in practice.

What Recertification Requires

B Corps recertify every three years. The process is built to measure improvement over time, not just maintenance.

Our score moved from 88.6 to 94.6 because we kept evaluating our practices, looking for where we could do better, and making changes that strengthen the way we work.

We are proud of the score. We are even more proud of the work behind it.

We were the first remodeler in Colorado to earn B Corp Certification in 2023. Recertifying in March 2026 with a higher score reflects a commitment that continues to grow.
